New Moon in Cancer: What Lies Beneath

The New Moon in Cancer occurs on the 4th of July, 2016 at 12°53’’ of Cancer.

Try checking what area of your birth chart is ruled by Cancer. As the Moon is the ruler of this lunation, you can also check out the part of your chart where the Moon is or the house ruled by Cancer for more insight.

If you are new or new-ish to astrology, this post is good place to start for generating your birth chart and checking out which part of your chart is being touched by this New Moon.

//What Lies Beneath//

At least I have the flowers of myself
and my thoughts, no god
can take that;
I have the fervour of myself for a presence
and my own spirit for light;
and my spirit with its loss
knows this;
though small against the black,
small against the formless rocks,
hell must break before I am lost;
before I am lost,
hell must open like a red rose
for the dead to pass.

 – Extract from the poem ‘Eurydice, by H.D.

Eurydike & Orpheus

Eurydike found out what lies beneath; on her wedding day she stepped on a viper and was taken into the Underworld.

Her husband in life, Orpheus, played the most beautiful music – sad, pleading, poetic. Orpheus was a charmer. He knew the notes to play, the strings to pluck. Eventually the Gods relented and let him travel below to reclaim his wife.

And so he went: down, down, down.

Deep into the place where only Pluto plays.

Orpheus promised, and it was the only promise he needed to keep, that he wouldn’t look at Eurydike until they left the Underworld. Driven mad by temptation, fear, and anticipation, he couldn’t help it.

He looked.

She was gone – forever.

Asteroid Eurydike conjunct the New Moon tells a story about being lost and found, and lost again. Hers is a cautionary tale about what happens when we keep expecting to get rescued, when we depend on those that just don’t have it in them to save us. In the sign of Cancer, I wonder how this might relate to the stories we’ve created about what family is there to do for us; with a New Moon in this sign we have the opportunity to re-frame how we conjure emotional security.

Judging by the latest news stories, it looks like we could all use some of that. A bit of familial connection could go a long way to heal the rifts that so obviously exist between us.

Recently we’ve all experienced the plight of Eurydike. We’ve gotten sucked into the underbelly and seen what lies beneath the platitudes and politeness. In the Underworld there are no clever filters, everything is exposed.

Maybe our neighbor isn’t who we thought he was.

Good or bad, maybe none of us are who we think we are.

Orpheus certainly wasn’t who he thought he was; he was a musician who tried to become a hero and ended up a madman.

Like Orpheus, we can get called up to do a job that’s just beyond our skill set, and sometimes we’re the ones asking someone else to go outside the boundaries of what they’re able to give. Plato thought him a coward but I don’t know if that’s true. Orpheus’ only real mistake was losing the faith too quickly.

These are trying times but we’ve got to remain hopeful.

This New Moon is a reminder that acute dependence on others can become a power play in very short order. It’s time to take some of that power back and to feel the security of holding it in our own hands.

Call off the rescue missions.

Maybe the person we’ve been counting on isn’t up for the job.

Maybe we don’t need to be saved.

Other Aspects + Current Events

Astrology is never ironic, it just is. And right now we have Kronos (leaders, government) exact Mercury (communications, contracts) directly across from asteroid Kalypso, whose very name means ‘concealing knowledge’. Within a short time, Mercury will also have moved over asteroids Libitina (dire consequences) and Karma.

Don’t click send too early, folks, and hold your tongue. The astrology of this moment says there will be a price to pay for words better left unsaid…although with Karma present there could also be a rather delectable feeling of ‘you totally deserve this.’

Depending on what side of the pond you’re on, you may be thinking about: Brexit, David Cameron resigning, Boris Johnson absconding from the responsibility of his mess or the looming threat of a Donald Trump presidency. All of these situations tie in perfectly with the Kronos-Mercury opposition to Kalypso. Pluto opposing all these points talks about the various power plays being made. There’s a thematic continuity about groups that want to be saved (Eurydike), and similarly, we can see an easy link between government leaders (Kronos) that have Orpheus’ charm in spinning pretty songs with zero actual ability to save anyone.

Meanwhile, Venus, which rules our values, is next to the centaur Thereus, which warns against becoming too attached to our career image, status, or becoming mercenary in pursuit of our goals. Michael Gove, I’m looking at you.

This also applies to anyone posting one too many pics of their holiday: you are not your Instagrams. Not even close.

On a final note – the New Moon in Cancer, at 13 degrees, occurs on the USA’s Independence Day, exactly on top of the USA’s natal Sun. I don’t believe that’s a coincidence. There’s a hope tucked in this New Moon for a new American consciousness or spiritual vision (Sun trine Neptune). As well, the asteroid America is conjunct asteroid Juno in Libra, which demands equality.

A girl can dream.

This time I couldn’t find the right song, so I used a poem. And no, this song doesn’t really have much to do with the reading…but I like it, and I share it here with you. ♥
