 What are the Nodes?

The lunar nodes, or nodes of the Moon, go by several names. Quite often, they are simply called ‘the nodes.’ They are also known individually as the North and South Node, the ascending and descending node, the Dragon’s Head and Tail, Caput Draconis and Cauda Draconis in ancient Latin, and Rahu and Ketu in Vedic Astrology.

But what are the nodes, exactly?

Firstly, and most importantly, the nodes are not physical bodies. There is no ‘north node’ looming out in the night skies, so you can put your binoculars away and grab your ephemeris instead.north node in leo 2017 what are the nodes

The nodes are points in space where two different orbits intersect: the orbit of the Moon around the Earth and the Sun’s orbit as it appears to move around the Earth. The point at which these two orbital paths cross create is where we find the north node and the south node (see diagram).

The nodes are also important in Astrology as they create eclipses. This is not just Astro fluff, but NASA-verified real-talk (quote straight from NASA):

“[…] the Moon’s orbit crosses the ecliptic at two points or nodes. If New Moon takes place within about 17° of a node, then a solar eclipse will be visible from some location on Earth. […] If Full Moon takes place within about 17° of a node then a lunar eclipse will be visible from a portion of Earth.”

So there you have it: nodes + moon = eclipse. And since eclipses themselves can create seismic shifts and changes, keeping track of the nodes’ sign changes is an imperative part of Astrology.

Node 101

The most important thing to know about the nodes after realizing they aren’t celestial bodies is that they are a set of two opposing points. The nodes encompass the North and South nodes, so for example, if your North Node is in Gemini, the South Node must directly and perfectly oppose it in Sagittarius.north node in leo 2017 nodes move backwards

Just as important to know is that the lunar nodes move backward through
an Astrological chart, unlike the rest of the planets. In an example, the north node was recently in Virgo, is now transiting in Leo, and will shift into Cancer in 18 months’ time. Planets typically move in the opposite direction, with a planet such as Venus moving through Cancer, then Leo, and then Virgo

The final thing to know about the nodes is that you may find two variations of the nodes: the ‘true’ node and the ‘mean’ node. The true node’s movements represent the exact transit of the nodes, while the mean node’s transits are based on an average speed. The true node can be direct or retrograde; the mean node is always retrograde. Personally, I use the true node.

The nodes take about 18 months to move through each zodiac sign and 18.5 years to circle the entire zodiac; every 18.5 years we each experience a ‘nodal return’, when the nodes return to the same sign and degree as our birth.

The North Node Vs. The South Node

“If we should lie along the nodal axis, we would look into the future facing North and accept the past facing South.”

-Dane Rudhyar

A lot is written about the meanings of the North and South Nodes, and there is even some confusion, or perhaps better said – a lack of definitive consensus – about what they mean. There are some pretty solid reasons for this.

The ancient Astrological texts on the Nodes differ widely. Vettius Valens, a 2nd-century Hellenistic Astrologer, says that Venus or Jupiter near the North Node brings success, and Saturn or Mars near the South Node brings loss. Al-Biruni, a 10th Century Persian Astrologer, writes that either of the Nodes makes the Sun or Moon weak. William Lilly, a 17th Century English Astrologer says the nodes shift alliances between good and evil, based on what planets are nearby. Vedic Astrology believes that both points can be evil, and Kaballic Astrology believes that the nodes represent a Tikkun or karmic correction.

Without a solid classical text to depend on, there was no concrete interpretanorth node in leo north node vs south nodetion of the nodes until Dane Rudhyar picked up the baton in the early 20th Century. From there, modern Western Astrology has interpreted the nodes largely as follows:

North Node: has the nature of Jupiter (expansive), encompasses what is to unfold, what one’s spiritual mission in this lifetime entails, the things we are here to learn, our destination, a place of progression and growth, positive evolution, a place in life we may initially resist

South Node: has the nature of Saturn (contracts), shows where we have come from in this lifetime and possibly in ‘past lives’ too, an area of familiarity or innate understanding, karma, loss, adversity, draining, depleting, a place where we may become stuck

Some describe the South Node as the ‘launchpad,’ and the North Node as the ‘destination.’ Due to the connection to the mythical dragon, the North Node as the dragon’s head may ‘swallow’ things whole, and the South Node as the dragon’s tail may be where things are flushed out.

Just A bit of Myth: Dragons Who Swallow the Sun

The myth connected to the lunar nodes is that of Rahu, a demon that hid amongst the gods to drink their sacred elixir and achieve immortality. Having been caught in the act by the watchful eyes of the Sun and Moon, Vishnu attempts to kill Rahu but succeeds only in cutting his newly immortal body into two.

In the Mahabharat, a set of Sanskrit verses that may be over 10,000 years old, this myth acted as an explication for eclipses. Rahu attempts to get his revenge on the Sun and Moon by periodically chasing after them and swallowing them whole, creating solar and lunar eclipses. Since Rahu was cut in two, the Sun and Moon eventually reappear as they fall from his mouth.

This mythical story bears a resemblance to similar myths in countries as disparate as the Philippines and ancient Persia, where we find myths of the Bakunawa and the Jawzahr, both dragons who eat the luminaries. In ancient China, a similar myth described a dragon who ate the Sun and Moon, with the responsibility of preventing eclipses falling to the Chinese themselves, who used noise to intimidate and scare off the dragon.

What piqued my interest about this particular collection of myths was the dragon itself. Sensibly, it stands to reason that there would need to be a fantastical, all-powerful adversary in play if one were to imagine the death of the Sun or Moon, being that they were the only sources of light for thousands of years, and were often perceived as the embodiment of the Gods.

Upon further look, it became clear that many of these myths describe the interchangeable depiction of both a dragon and a serpent as this adversary.

In myth, dragons often guard treasures, as in the classic scenario of Midevil princesses stranded in towers, or denote the change in a cycle, as in the case of the New Year’s dragon dance in China. Serpents also have a similar use in ancient myth: pythons acted as the guardians of Delphi and are as an often-referenced totem for the infinite cycle of death and rebirth, as seen in Ouroboros, the self-eating serpent.

Even the glyph of the lunar nodes resembles the horseshoe shape of the ‘Omega’ (Ω), the character that punctuates the cycle between “the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.”

The change of the nodes, therefore, may resonate with the mythical meanings of dragons and serpents, animals that represent the never-ending cycle of mystical death and rebirth, which mimics our much more human cycle of desperation and inspiration.

Maybe the nodes do guard over something precious: is it a fated treasure quest pre-built within us, or the dragons we must slay?

There are no heroes, after all, without dragons.

North Node in Leo & South Node in Aquarius

Changes in the lunar nodes are just a shift in a journey that is already ongoing, like deboarding a bus and getting on a train. Most importantly, from an Astrological view, of course, the Nodes demarcate the axis of zodiacal signs where eclipse events will occur.

The use of the nodes is not, however, limited to the eclipses. I’ve often found them a potent indicator in solar return and progressed charts, and by transit, the North Node, in particular, can rustle up the feeling of positive fate at a moment’s notice.

So, what can we expect as the North Node enters Leo, and the South enters Aquarius?

Long story short: we may up the expression ante in the part of our chart ruled by Leo.

As a famous Leo once said, “Express yourself.”

Leo is, of course, the ‘royal’ sign of the zodiac embodying the lion’s regal qualities. Leo is known for its expressive, performative, and dramatic nature, strength, enthusiasm and pride. When well-balanced, this sign is noble and courageous; when poorly-balanced, it can become narcissistic and domineering.

I’ve written elsewhere about Leo:

Leos exude a steady dose of spirit consistent with their status as a fixed fire sign – think the warm glow of the fireplace and the seductive call of an open campfire.

These aren’t fireworks (Sagittarius) or sparks (Aries); this is an energy that sustains, invites an audience and solidifies connections. Leo is the sign of friendly fire.

Leos are well-known for their artistic, soulful creative expression. But at a deeper level, this isn’t just art for art’s sake – the vector of Leos expressions start in their hearts and rushes forth until it touches yours, too.

This last line is indicative of the work that we’re here to do over the next 18 months. We must tend to the fire that feeds our hearts and touches the hearts of others, too.

I know that this sounds hugely woo, but it is not. Allow me, please, to Straight Woo this:

The act of creation is not something small or simplistic. What you create and put out into the world matters. It is only the fucked up state of play that makes us feel the things we make are not worthwhile if it doesn’t get enough ‘likes,’ shares, follows or finance. Somehow, creative pursuits of self-expression have become entangled in the modern mess of ‘personal brand’, that handily-crafted – very rarely, hand-crafted – image that shines with the sheen of filter and font, hashtag and highlight.

This is why more Instagram accounts look similar than dissimilar, and why many folks spend way too much weighing up which card stock to use for their business cards and way too little time taking stock of their talents and value.

Something needs to change.

The Leo-Aquarius axis is here to teach us that we are all the same, yet we are all individuals (Aquarius), too, and each of us deserves to be felt and seen (Leo) – just as we are. Your time and energy are sacred, and this nodal transit is a lesson in aligning your heart with your creations to craft something you can be loyal to long-term.

On a less personal level, the Leo-Aquarius axis is already in play and describes very well how online media (Aquarius) is intersecting with expression (Leo). Immediately, this combo makes me think of Jimmy Kimmel’s recent heartfelt description (Leo) of his newborn child’s medical problems, and how that made him reflect on the importance of healthcare for all (Aquarius). It also calls to mind comedians using their work to take down politicians (Melissa McCarthy as ‘Spicey’, Randy Rainbow anytime).

With this axis, we could be using our expression for the creation of humanitarian art forms, ‘creations for all,’ or encouraging collective expressions. We could use our singular, unique voice (Aquarius) to perform the kind of story only we can tell, the way that only we can tell it (Leo).

Insights by Rising Sign

So what do you have to expect as the North Node moves into Leo and the South Node moves into Aquarius? Check these insights by reading for your rising sign. Don’t know your rising sign? Make your chart here.

Note these are fun, quick insights, but do not match up to a full reading done by a professional astrologer (like me, for example).

 Aries Rising

You may feel drawn towards: Lovers, romance, sex, children, and creative projects. In ancient terms, this was the house of ‘good fortune,’ and although I don’t want to oversell it, this could largely signal a fun, if indulgent and even risky, period. Creative projects may be particularly blessed and the types of people we partner with may better align with our heart.

You may feel less sure about: Groups, friends, networks, and acquaintances. Just as in normal life, when we spend more time with lovers or have a child, we inevitably retract from friendships and the social scene. You may feel called to focus on your creative projects to the detriment of friendships.

You may need to find the balance between: friends and lovers, creativity projects and the people that can help you create them, your children and your friendships/social life, your aspirations in love/romance/creativity.

♉️ Taurus Rising

You may feel drawn towards: the couch! With the North Node in the 4th, some get drawn into a more private life and start feeling quite comfy at home or with their family. Some buy actual homes, start a ‘home’ or become reacquainted with matters of family and childhood.

You may feel less sure about: the external ‘out there’ world, particularly your career. The South Node moving through the 10th House can sometimes derail a career ambition, but often for the better, either by rebalancing the importance given to home vs. career or by precipitating change.

You may need to find the balance between: home and career, loved ones and your ambitions, your private life and public life, your father and your mother (and the inner expression of those energies).

♊️ Gemini Rising

You may feel drawn towards: writing, communicating and all forms of dissemination (I started this blog when the North Node entered my 3rd House…!). The 3rd House also involves siblings, the mind, our sense of community and culture. The pace of life may feel more ‘mundane,’ but it may also help you button-down and get expressing.

You may feel less sure about: foreign places and people, long-distance travel, higher education, religion/spirituality, and dreams/visions. During the South Node transiting the 9th House, one’s spiritual center or beliefs may become the focus of a difficult but rewarding unveiling process.

You may need to find the balance between: the mundane and the ethereal, your community and the wider world, how to communicate about your spirituality, the business of everyday spirituality vs. the mystical, cosmic essence of ‘spirit,’ high school vs. higher education, the familiar and the unfamiliar.

♋️ Cancer Rising

You may feel drawn towards: Moolah, money, dollars. The North Node in the 2nd House signals important changes in your relationship to money and how you earn it (could it become more self-expressed or creative?), as well as your talents, skills, and self-esteem.

You may feel less sure about: Other folks’ money, or, how money plays out between the people who share it. The 8th House is a place of fear, so there could be a need to address issues you have about money and power dynamics.

You may need to find the balance between: your money vs. other people’s money, income vs. financial obligations, income vs. debt, loss vs. gain, our confidence in the ability to accumulate vs. fear of eventual loss.

♌️ Leo Rising

You may feel drawn towards: you, you, you, and…you. How convenient, for a Leo! I jest, at least in part. You’re likely to become more self-focused and concentrated on your personal development, needs, body, and energy during this passage.

You may feel less sure about: other folks, including but not limited to your nearest and dearest, as in the case of a marriage partner. Partnerships may experience powerful shifts as imbalances are flushed to the surface.

You may need to find the balance between: yourself and others, yourself and your partner, your individuated sense of identity and your marriage, your needs versus the needs of your business partner, you versus what you may project onto ‘the other.’

♍️ Virgo Rising

You may feel drawn towards: the dark side of life. You may willingly enter a period of seclusion, retreat, or isolation to attend to issues of body or mind. Traditionally associated with suffering, illness, and the ‘undoing of the self,’ there may be a need to meet one’s demons’ head-on or do deep therapeutic work. Karma may rear its head.

You may feel less sure about: mundane, everyday, surface level life. The 6th House is about the myriad of small, daily actions that make up life – taking stuff the dry cleaners, feeding your cat – that sort of thing. You may be drawn into yourself to the detriment of the elements of life that now may feel shallow. The 6th House is also about illness, so you may need to be extra mindful of your health.

You may need to find the balance between: service to others vs. service at work, your body vs. the habits that hurt it, escapism vs. the need to show up, isolation or retreat vs. work, self-oppression vs. external oppression.

♎️ Libra Rising

You may feel drawn towards: Friends, Romans, countrymen. Libra is already a social master in the making, so as a result of this transit, you may be able to connect to a wider group of friends and acquaintances, and even benefit in some way from the connections you make.

You may feel less sure about: lovers – who has time, with such a full social calendar? It may also be that a bit of karmic material popping up in relationships has you doubting a romantic relationship of some description, as well as your creative desires or the question of children.

You may need to find the balance between: friends and lovers, creative projects and the people that can help you make them happen, your children and your friendships/social life, your aspirations in love/romance/creativity.

♏️ Scorpio Rising

You may feel drawn towards: a big shift, change or step up in your career. You may experience a course correction, but the North Node in the 10th House spells growth, so make the most of it. Now is the time to embrace the change – just make sure that whatever it is you’re creating speaks from your heart.

You may feel less sure about: home, family, or your parents. Are there hidden things here coming out to play that need to be addressed with your family? Is there too much happening at work to attend to your home?

You may need to find the balance between: home and career, loved ones and your ambitions, your private life and public life, your father and your mother (and the inner expression of those energies).

♐️ Sagittarius Rising

You may feel drawn towards: the pursuit of higher knowledge, whether that’s university or universal. There could be a very strong call towards healing, spirituality, religion, even Astrology, as you expand your mind and look outwards. Foreign people, places, and languages could also feature.

You may feel less sure about: anything you already know, plus the humdrum small-town community vibe, the culture you grew up in and even your siblings.  Entranced by matters of the spirit, you may feel limited or bored with matters of the mind – plus your experience of higher wisdom may be hard to put into words.

You may need to find the balance between: the mundane and the ethereal, your community and the wider world, how to communicate about your spirituality, the business of everyday spirituality vs. the mystical, cosmic essence of ‘spirit,’ high school vs. higher education, the familiar and the unfamiliar.

♑️ Capricorn Rising

You may feel drawn towards: tackling your attitude towards fear, death, and all manners of decay and loss. Here too we have inheritances (financial or emotional) as well the money that you are owed and share. There may be a desire to see ‘beyond the veil’ and discover what’s secretly driving you and others beneath the surface.

You may feel less sure about: your money or your ability to generate income. Money may stagnate, dry up, or simply cease to be a major distraction or motivation.

You may need to find the balance between: your money vs. other people’s money, income vs. financial obligations, income vs. debt, loss vs. gain, our confidence in the ability to accumulate vs. fear of eventual loss.

♒️ Aquarius Rising

You may feel drawn towards: the needs of your partner, which may (seem to) be ‘more important,’ or in general, issues regarding one’s committed partnerships in love and biz. You may realize how much you project onto your partner or other people, or, you may re-think how you want to show up for other folks by changing your professional status.

You may feel less sure about: yourself! The South Node transiting the 1st can be a bit of astrological colonic (sorry for the imagery); it’s not uncommon to face issues of body, energy, and vitality, or feel lacking in ego, which can, nevertheless, be useful when applied productively. This is about a shift in your sense of self and how that relates to or has depended on others to some extent.

You may need to find the balance between: yourself and others, yourself and your partner, your individuated sense of identity and your marriage, your needs versus the needs of your business partner, you versus what you may project onto ‘the other.’

♓️ Pisces Rising

You may feel drawn towards: colleagues, your health, everyday living, pets, and the quality of service you want to perform. Work matters, in particular, may get a boost via your steadfast, generous attitude towards admin and rolling up your sleeves. Hard work will be the order of the day.

You may feel less sure about: lots of things. The South Node moving through the 12th may release underlying tensions, bad habits, and addictions, but only so they can be healed via the 6th house business of showing up daily to take care of yourself. Take note of what springs forth.

You may need to find the balance between: service to others vs. service at work, your body vs. the habits that hurt it, escapism vs. the need to show up, isolation or retreat vs. work, self-oppression vs. external oppression.
