Astrology Transits for August 2017
August is a busy month of Astrology, so strap yourselves in and get ready for the ride.
I don’t think there will be any shocks to the system when I suggest that the most anticipated event of the month is the ‘Great American Eclipse,’ which in Astro-land is known as the total Solar Eclipse in Leo. Usually, eclipses fly more or less under the radar for non-sky-gazing folks, but being that this one is fully visible within the continental US and is a ‘total’ eclipse, there’s been more than the average hype around this event, and hence, more interest in the Astrological assessment of it, too.
So, what’s a ‘total’ eclipse? Here’s a handy breakdown:
Partial eclipses only, well, partially obscure the Sun, and the visual effect is that of a ‘bite’ taken out of the Sun.
Annular eclipses very nearly cover the Sun’s face, creating an ultra-bright ‘ring of fire’ visual.
Total eclipses are the big daddy: with the majority of the Sun’s face masked, we can see its brilliant corona shining out from behind the Moon’s darkness.
With that out of the way, let’s get to the heart of what’s to come during August, a month with two eclipses, Saturn and Juno stationing direct, Uranus and Mercury stationing retrograde, the third and final Jupiter-Pluto square, and a lovely Jupiter-Saturn sextile.
Astrology transits for August 1st – 10th
August starts off with a square between the Sun and asteroid Pallas-Athena, exact August 1st. Though she may be the cool-souled sister of strategy, Pallas does like to win; if you’re feeling less than triumphant today (or indeed, if you’re in need of a win), you might wish to bypass today in favor of August 2nd when Pallas sextiles Ceres, enabling the nurturing of any vision you wish to pursue.
On August 12th, Mercury will station retrograde at 11 degrees of Virgo, but before then, it will gift us a handful of nice transits to enjoy before its special brand of retrograde confusion settles in. The only caveat: even these kinder aspects may require a re-do later, being that we are now well and truly in the ‘shadow’ of Mercury’s retrograde.
August 2nd is a good day for getting down to business. Mercury, the planet most closely associated with our mind, will be sitting hand in hand with asteroid Vesta, the principle of focus and dedication. You’ll have tunnel vision galore for nailing the nitty-gritty, as both bodies will be in the ultra-vigilant sign of Virgo. This aspect will occur once again on August 11th after Mercury is retrograde, so if you don’t get it perfect the first time, don’t fret my pet. Mercury will trine Pallas-Athena on August 8th making it a good day for sales and negotiations, and anything strategic involving the written word and on August 10th Mercury in Virgo will sextile Venus in Cancer, creating a delightful blend of the evocative and the efficient.
On August 3rd, Uranus will station retrograde. For those of us with planets in the late degrees of Aries (!!!), especially Aries folks born between April 11th and April 19th, this is going to feel like taking the pot off of the burner: there’s only so much change and turbulence a single soul can take. Uranus’ agenda for change and illumination, no matter the cost, is going underground now until January 2nd, 2018.
I wouldn’t plan a family reunion or anything else that features a tug of war for August 4th. Most importantly, on this day we’ll have the last of the three Jupiter-Pluto squares, which have been initiating all of us in a PhD-level understanding of power dynamics since November 2016. By now, you likely know the score and have a better understanding of how, and why, you may have been giving away more power than necessary in the parts of your chart ruled by Libra & Capricorn.
On the same day, Venus will oppose asteroid Juno, Goddess of Marriage, and Mars will square asteroid Pallas-Athena, Goddess of the Creative-Strategic impulse. The Venus-Juno opposition makes a poor day for a romantic rendezvous, and Mars squaring Pallas might challenge your bedroom plans (as well as your artistic intentions).
The Lunar Eclipse in Aquarius on August 7th seems like it may be a lesson in pain before pleasure and work before wonder. Just before the lunar eclipse, the Moon will oppose Mars (irritation, anger, pain), but just after, it will trine Jupiter (generosity, plenitude, harmony). Saturn, the eclipse’s ruler, is not so much a ‘feelings’ kind of guy, especially with the Moon in the sign of Aquarius, which inevitably prefers a few well-sharpened No. 2 pencils and a blank Venn diagram over wading into murky, emotional territory. Saturn does, however, know what hard work can do for the soul, and how good that feels. The effort we’ve put into the area of our lives ruled by Aquarius since last January is coming to fulfillment. With Saturn making friendly aspects to the Nodes and the Sun & Moon both in lovely reception to Jupiter there’s an air of pleasantness permeating the background of this lunar eclipse. The mood post-eclipse is equally friendly, notwithstanding particularly and personally undelightful aspects to your natal chart.
August 9th, Venus will be sextile both asteroid Vesta and Pallas-Athena; Vesta and Pallas-Athena will trine each other the day after, on August 10th. All of these aspects are incredibly fertile for femme-based relating of all kinds: making art, making a community, making waves, making non-linear plans.
August 10th closes off the first third of the month with a kindly Sun-Jupiter sextile: expect ease and harmony.
Astrology transits for August 11th – 20th
The middle of August is a quieter patch of time dominated by Mercury’s station retrograde, which starts August 12th. Mercury will cover 11° Virgo to 28° Leo, and stations direct on September 5th. All the usual Mercury rules apply: it’s not the best idea to start something new or sign on the dotted line if you can help it. The one day that is traditionally considered best for such activities is Mercury’s inferior conjunction with the Sun, which happens August 26th.
Also on August 12th, Venus will conjoin asteroid Ceres, and both points will be sent harmonious rays from Neptune. When Venus and Ceres combine their powers, their warmth knows no bounds: sex, cuddling, creativity, great eats – you name it, you’ve got it. Neptune’s trine to both ladies is only going to serve to make this all seem rather otherworldly and transcendental – enjoy the rosy vibes while they last.
The day after, Mercury retrograde will repeat the trine to Pallas-Athena it initiated on August 8th. Might you need to re-think your strategy? On the same day, August 13th, Saturn will trine the Sun, otherwise stabilizing the day, so it’s likely that what comes up for a re-work now will be for the kind of sensible, long-term reasons that Saturn loves.
August 15th starts to cook up an assembly of challenging aspects that builds to a T-Square between Venus, Jupiter, and Pluto on August 17th, and which will eventually include Ceres on August 21st. Venus opposite Pluto can create a stealthy (even, unhealthy??), magnetic attraction, Venus square Jupiter loves a bit off excess; together, it’s a recipe for fun and fantasy, but perhaps we’d be best to leave it at that. With Vesta opposing Neptune on August 15th, a few of us may be feeling a bit -ahem- foggy about our commitments and attempt a bit of escapism to compensate.
Keep your eyeballs peeled on August 16th: with the Sun conjunct the North Node in Leo, what comes your way on this day may be just the karmic ticket of your daydreams.
August 20th Mars sextiles Jupiter, which will create a good day for gently pushing ahead at a moment when our drive (Mars) will be met with enthusiasm (Jupiter).
Astrology transits for August 21st – 31st
The Solar Eclipse in Leo on August 21st is an opportunity to really – and I mean *really* – let go and move forward. Although this eclipse has already been studied six ways from Sunday, I add my two bits here: only moments before the eclipse the Moon and Sun both trine Uranus, and on the same day asteroid Goddess Ceres will perfectly oppose Pluto. This is bumpy, exciting, edge-of-your-seat stuff, but there’s an undertone of something more complex, too, given the Ceres-Pluto opposition. Mythologically, Pluto is the antagonist of Ceres’ main narrative, that of losing her beloved daughter, Persephone, to the Underworld. After a journey of loss and pain, Ceres eventually finds her daughter again, but will never have her as before; now, she must share Persephone with Pluto. Seeing Ceres and Pluto together in this arrangement suggests, at least to me, that our leaps forward (Sun/Moon trine Uranus) will be tempered by realizing we must also give something away, too (Ceres opposite Pluto). Like kites in the wind or sailboats on glassy waters, we must lighten our load if we are to fly higher, sail faster. [Want to know how to interpret the Moon cycles for yourself? August 22nd the Sun enters Virgo, kicking off its yearly month-long transit of the maiden sign. Happy Birthday, Virgos. 💜♍️
August 22nd Mars will trine Saturn and August 23rd Vesta will trine Pluto; both aspects are a good follow-up to the Solar Eclipse in Leo. Mars trine Saturn will give us the control required (Saturn) to lasso the phenomenal vortex of drive and energy (Mars) that opened up the day before; Vesta trine Pluto adds a focused, determined (Vesta) attitude to our transformation efforts (Pluto). Eclipses take anywhere from 5-6 months to unfold, so we’ll have plenty of time to unpack its wares and make the necessary arrangements, but these post-eclipse aspects certainly can’t hurt and may give some of us a head start.
An ideal day for healing comes August 24th, when Neptune sextiles Pallas-Athena and Venus trines Chiron. Venus does square Uranus on the same day, so may there’s one last thing (maybe, a surprising thing) that needs to be said or revealed before we can move into the misty healing space provide by the Neptune-Pallas sextile.
Saturn has been retrograde in Sagittarius since April 6th, 2017 but will station direct on August 25th. During these months, you may have been revisiting rules, obligations, and limits you’ve been facing in the part of your chart ruled by Sagittarius. With new information under your belt, now is the time to start moving forward once again. It might have felt like fruitless work, or even worse, like inertia; Saturn’s projects always seem the hardest right before you start reaping the rewards. Keep the faith.
Also on August 25th, the Sun will trine asteroid Goddess of Marriage Juno, the day before Juno stations direct and Venus enters Leo (August 26th). The Sun trine Juno seems to be a kind of rallying call for all of those who have been carrying heavy relationship baggage around since earlier this year – particularly relevant if you have personal planets near the middle degrees of Capricorn and Cancer. Juno has not had an easy time of things in 2017, what with her entanglement in the Venus retrograde (ouch!), and her back-and-forth cha-cha at the edge of Pluto’s caldera (risky!). Between Juno direct and Venus’ entry into the warm-hearted, loyal sign of Leo, there could be a renewed sense of commitment, and sensitivity, to our partners. When Mercury trines Juno on August 27th, you may have the perfect opportunity for just such conversations.
Mercury will enter the fiery heart of Sol on August 26th in what is known as the ‘inferior’ conjunction with the Sun, which occurs only when Mercury is retrograde. The inferior conjunction is a kind of personal New Moon-cum-baptism for Mercurius, a planet which signifies all things mental and communicable; a new Mercury cycle builds between now and October 7th, the ‘superior’ conjunction.
August 27th holds one of the year’s nicest aspects between the outer planets, a sextile between Jupiter and Saturn. Due to their differing speeds, this doesn’t often happen: the last sextile between Jupiter & Saturn occurred in 2004, and the next one won’t be until 2023. If you’re able, you’ll want to take advantage of this moment. When Jupiter, the planet of expansion, is in cahoots with Saturn, the planet of discipline, our motivations seem to align effortlessly with a sturdy plan of action; the results can be tremendously fruitful. Mars conjunct the North Node may serve to highlight a particular area of drive or ambition you might feel compelled to investigate further.
August 31st, Mercury re-enters Leo as part of his retrograde. We may be inclined to reconsider how we’re communicating: are we proud of our work? Can we see our heart – which is ruled by Leo – emanating out from how we write, speak, or wheel and deal? By the end of the retrograde on September 5th, we may have gained a new sense of integrity or much-needed insight about the parts of our charts ruled by Virgo and Leo.
On the same day (August 31st), Saturn squares Vesta while Ceres sextiles Vesta. Be careful that as you fix your laser-sharp focus on a particular project (Ceres sextile Vesta) that you don’t forget to take care of yourself, too; Saturn square Vesta can create situations where we overwork our little fingers to the bones or skip town hoping someone else will pick up the baton. Neither option is a viable long-term plan, so you may want to take the easiest route and just make sure you’re well-fed and rested enough to keep on keeping on.
