SHAMELESS PLUG ALERT:
New Moon in Virgo – September 20th, 2017 // Confronting Chiron, Cultivating Compassion
To relate to others compassionately is a challenge. Really communicating to the heart and being there for someone else–our child, spouse, parent, client, patient, or the homeless woman on the street–means not shutting down on that person, which means, first of all, not shutting down on ourselves.
This means allowing ourselves to feel what we feel and not pushing it away. It means accepting every aspect of ourselves, even the parts we don’t like.
– Pema Chödrön, When Things Fall Apart
Conventional wisdom considers the Full Moon, and not the New Moon, a test of our psychic integrity.
At a Full Moon, the Sun and Moon – our soul and the body – inhabit opposing signs; what middle ground exists between the two spaces is normally fraught with heightened sensitivities (lunacy!) brought on by a planetary tug-of-war.
A New Moon, on the other hand, is the unification of Sun and Moon, body and soul, spirit and matter. With the Sun and Moon in the same sign, a quiet fertile space opens up that is ripe for impregnation.
The New Moon in Virgo, however, has the makings of both a New & Full Moon: we are simultaneously being held in the dark, numinous field provided by the melding of Sun and Moon, while Chiron, that comet of wound and wisdom, throws an illuminating, knowing gaze our way. Whatever existential pains exist across the parts of our chart governed by Pisces & Virgo are coming up for a masterful, thorny review; more than a new seed in need of planting, there is something here to confront before moving forward.
The feeling is a toggle between perfectionist, hypercritical ways and compassionate self-regard; the danger is that the well-honed sword of Mars, precise and cutting in Virgo, will be too convenient a hook for our own hanging.
Even without Mars’ presence, there can be a secret rage lurking within Virgo, for whatever isn’t quite up to snuff or pleasing to her very particular palate is not just disappointing, but altogether humiliating. Virgo’s world is that of input-output equilibrium: the ends nearly always justify the means, and if they don’t, there is a gut-wrenching sense of inadequacy which results.
And yet, so many of us have known failure in its many forms, as dreams deferred and those which shriveled in the sun before our very eyes. All of this, and more, even when we’ve put in ample doses of work and worry, two of Virgo’s favorite past times.
At this New Moon we’ll need to negotiate difficult territory if we seek wholeness: devolving into a loop of self-harming critique won’t help (Mercury conjunct Mars in Virgo) and neither will stepping out of our human suits and claiming we simply do not exist (Chiron in Pisces; Jim Carrey this week; Shia LaBoef circa 2014).
We must accept that wherever we are right now is where we are meant to be, and inevitably, that we are ‘still’ there because it continues to serve us.
We must also, as a matter of urgency, start cultivating compassion for ourselves, an especially important task if you’re the not-so-rare bird who’s cup overfloweth with compassion for others while your own cupboard sits bare.
I read recently that the virgin, Virgo’s symbol, is ‘closed to distraction’ and therefore, ‘open to revelation.’
At this New Moon, I hope the same for you.
