Astrology Transits for October 2017
Fall, leaves, fall; die, flowers, away;
Lengthen night and shorten day;
Every leaf speaks bliss to me,
Fluttering from the autumn tree.
I shall smile when wreaths of snow
Blossom where the rose should grow;
I shall sing when night’s decay
Ushers in a drearier day.
– Emily Brontë
It is a uniquely modern conundrum that the Autumnal social calendar requires a dramatic ramping up of frenzied holiday interaction at the precise moment the rest of the natural world is suggesting we lay low and turn within.
The Sun’s entry into the sign of Libra, and therefore the Autumn Equinox, resonates with the Last Quarter phase of the Moon, a part of the lunar cycle that Demetra George has described as the withering of the fruit on the vine, in preparation for a new cycle of seeds to be released.
And yet, at the same time that the trees let go of what is no longer viable – the previous season’s blooms, now crumpled and paper thin – something else of value is identified and carried over.
Unquestionably, this seasonal impetus dovetails beautifully with the most impactful Astrological news of the month: Jupiter’s entry into Scorpio. After more than a year in Libra, Jupiter’s move into Scorpio ushers forth a new energy that is throbbing and penetrative (keep calm and coitus!); for many, the intense reverberations of Jupiter in Scorpio will be a welcome respite after Libra’s airy meanderings.
Astrology transits for October 1st – 10th
The standout feature of the first ten days of October is Jupiter’s move into Scorpio. Scorpio is a much-misunderstood sign, so much so, that many in the Astro blogosphere are already attributing any number of plagues, personal and political, to Jupiter moving into the sign of the scorpion.
Let me put this into perspective for you: Jupiter has been in Libra, the sign of balance, diplomacy, and fairness since October 2016. Jupiter’s business is to enlarge or expand the energetic pull of a space as he transits.
To be fair, we all experience life differently, but you’d have to have lived under a rock if you thought that there was a notable increase in balance, diplomacy, or fairness in over the past year. If anything, Jupiter’s move through Libra has highlighted the need for those things, without actually bringing them about properly; in addition, Jupiter’s aspects as he moved through Libra were difficult enough to thwart his best intentions in bringing about goodness.
So worry not, my darlings: Jupiter in Scorpio will not turn you and yours into graveyard-dwelling, alchemists-cum-necrophiliacs obsessed with death, sex, and serial killers. The added bonus is that Jupiter will make a series of swimmingly positive aspects during its residence in Scorpio. Count on things to get really intense and really clear at a moment’s notice – this is not a sign that messes around. (You’re welcome.)
Otherwise, the month starts on a nice and easy note, with a Mercury-Ceres sextile across Libra & Leo; today, you can count on communiqé that carries equal dashes flavor and fairness. A Mars-Pluto trine on the same day may have you bravely moving forward with your plans, ideally those which match your deepest motivations. Equally, if you’ve been questioning your intentions, this is a great day for a re-assessment of where you’re headed and why.
October 3rd could be a heavy but productive day for matters of love when Venus trines Pluto and Mercury squares Juno. To me, the feeling here is of needing to go to a very intense place with your partner, courtesy of the Venus-Pluto trine; discussions may not be easy on this day, but they will be worth it in the long-run. This isn’t the best day for accord – aim for understanding instead.
If you’ve got something to do and you need oodles of focus to do it, October 4th will be just your kind of day. With a conjunction between Mercury and Vesta, there’s a strong likelihood for accessing hyper-normal levels of concentration.
The Full Moon in Aries on October 5th may test your patience. Aries is already a fiery, combustible sign for our lady Luna, but with a square to Pluto and oppositions to both Mercury and Vesta, we may feel especially challenged to keep our cool. Your mind may feel focused – even stuck on a particular topic – but a Full Moon in Aries may make our emotions boil over despite our best intentions. The good thing about being stuck, of course, is that it’s focus in disguise, although on this day you may not feel that way. Venus & Mars connecting on the same day adds appeal, attraction, and creative-sexual energy galore. [Want to know how to interpret the Moon cycles for yourself? If there’s fallout from this Full Moon, you’ll have plenty of time to process, as the next two days are relatively quiet.
Things pick back up again on October 8th, with a Sun-Mercury conjunction and a Venus-Saturn square. This conjunction between the Sun and Mercury is what is known as the ‘superior’ conjunction, a kind of Full Moon moment for our man Mercury. A cycle of learning has been unfolding since August 26th, and now everything is clear, for good or for bad. My concern is that the Venus-Saturn square on the same day suggests a certain ‘knowing’ around our romantic partnerships that may be less than pleasant. On the other hand, a Venus-Saturn square can often talk about distance from our partners, so the right thing to do this day may indeed be to take a few steps back.
If the Sun-Mercury conjunction magnified a particular topic for us, October 9th might have us obsessively sifting through what we’ve been told over and over; alternatively, this is an excellent day for getting to the bottom of things, no-holds-barred. Whatever does come about today can have a long-term effect on the future, owing to level-headed Saturn making an excellent aspect to the North Node.
October 10th Jupiter enters Scorpio and stays in this sign until November 9th, 2018. On the same day, Venus opposes Chiron: expect pain and healing in matters of the heart.
Astrology transits for October 11th – 20th
The middle third of October opens with a square between the two Astro ‘baddies,’ Mars and Saturn on October 11th. Whenever Mars & Saturn get together it’s a reasonable estimation that they’re up to no good; in square to one another, they’re downright diabolical. Be on the lookout for frustrations, thou-shalt-not-pass moments, and feeling like you’ve hit a brick wall.
The next day (October 12th) should help to smooth over the edges, when Mercury (our mind, communication), gives a friendly nod in the direction of Saturn (discipline, authority), and communication becomes stable if but a bit stern. Also helpful is Venus’ return to Libra on October 14th which will provide the lady of love a much friendlier local for conducting her amorous affairs.
On October 15th, there’s a distinct danger of blowing a gasket or few. The gasket could even be mechanical or automotive, as Mercury-Uranus oppositions tend to create transport issues. It’s also not a good day to take a punt on technology, conduct a once-in-a-lifetime job interview via Skype, or casually update your iPhone. The Mars-Chiron opposition on the same day may expose a weakness in this system, so take care with passwords et al.
October 16th could be an excellent day for making a plan and getting all parties on board. Pallas trine to Juno will create simpatico situations galore; the Sun sextile Saturn will add a dose of much-needed seriousness to discussions.
Mercury enters Scorpio on October 17th. When in this sign, Mercury functions in a Sherlockian manner, quick on his feet but slow to reveal his position. Expect communications to and settle for nothing less than what’s brutally honest. The next day, however, Mercury may be less brutal and more bountiful when he joins up with Jupiter, making this the first proper aspect we’ve had since Jupiter entered Scorpio. For a change, there could be something good waiting for you in your inbox, as it’s Jupiter’s job to produce the positive and generate generosity.
Looking at the chart for the New Moon in Libra on October 19th feels like the final post-mortem review of September’s Jupiter-Uranus opposition; both the Sun and Moon in Libra will be opposing change-tastic Uranus in Aries. There’s an interesting mix afoot here, what with the Sun & Moon tightly – and I mean, *tightly* – opposed to Uranus, which makes for big breaks in the emotional field, but at the same time, the Moon’s nod to Saturn suggests stability and responsibility. We may need to innovate or make changes in the part of our chart ruled by Libra, but this lunation begs for these out-of-the-blue changes and breaks from monotony to have just a dash of common sense. Astrology transits for October 21st – 31st
We may withdraw from the fray to lick our wounds on October 21st, when Venus will sextile Ceres, setting the stage for all manner of tender self-care, whether that’s found in food or fashion.
October 22nd, Mars enters Libra, an ill-suited sign for the warrior planet. Mars likes the be in the soldier’s barracks (Aries) or his secret subterranean bunker (Scorpio): the airy-fairy, pansies and petit-fours sitting room of Libra is not the kind of place where he easily fits in. Mars would happily trade in small talk for his sword any day, and while Mars’ transit of Libra may seem placid on the surface, just remember that his sword is still there somewhere (and – strategically rendered small talk can cut just as precisely as a sword). Be on the lookout for passive-aggressiveness or folks taking the most indirect route possible towards what they want.
On the same day, Mercury will oppose Pallas-Athena and square Ceres. You want to say something (or is it – that you need something?), but maybe today you won’t find the right words. It won’t help to assume that the other person will magically intuit what it is you want: when in doubt, write it out.
October 23rd is a challenging day for partnerships, with Venus square to Juno. Venus and Juno, both ladies of love, bring about dizzying romantic interludes when in cahoots, but when they’re in a spat, watch out. The Sun’s entry into Scorpio on the same day (Happy Birthday, Scorpios!!) may generate questions about jealousy, sexual containment, or where the boundaries lie.
The next day (October 24th) is the right moment for smoothing over the edges, making up, and making love. On this day, Neptune and Mercury will both sextile Juno, and Mercury will trine Neptune. The contacts between Neptune, Mercury, and Juno will make for soft-touch conversations surrounding expectations and reality in relationships. Were we holding one another to impossible standards, perhaps? The Mercury-Neptune trine will provide the right words, context, and tone, which you’ll be able to apply to intimacy or inspiration.
October 26th is one of the finest days of the year. On this day, the Sun in Scorpio joins Jupiter, freshly entered into Scorpio. Now is the time to step out and make your debut: you’re ready for your close up, particularly if you’ve got planets around 0-6 degrees of Scorpio, Pisces, or Cancer.
Only a few days prior, relationships of all kinds may have hit the skids, and October 27th could be an unwelcome revival of this material. Venus square to Pluto today could drag us into the powerful undertow of magnetic attractions or manifest as power strugles with our most important persons. The Mercury-Pluto sextile on the same day will provide the no-holds-barred perception for getting to the bottom of things.
The next day when the Sun in Scorpio opposes Pallas-Athena (October 28th), we may be feeling confused about which way to head. Are we up to the challenge? Is our creative block temporary, or a symptom of some greater inner struggle?
The final days of October contain a collection of aspects to the North Node; whatever arises on these days may feel meant to be.
October 29th, Vesta in Libra sextiles the North Node: focus on teamwork, partnerships, and a fair give and take will be important today.
October 30th, Mercury in Scorpio squares the North & South Node. This is a tipping point, fork-in-the-road moment: whatever messages, contracts, or communications come our way on this day will change where we’re headed. Be prepared to pick a lane.
October 31st, Venus in Libra sextiles the North Node. Attraction could both be on the cards, so choose your Halloween paramours wisely.
