Astrology Transits for December 1st – December 9th, 2017
December holds two key Astrological movements, one of which graces us with its presence (and will likely make a disgrace of our presence/presents) early on in the month: Mercury’s retrograde in Sagittarius, which starts December 3rd.
Depending on your outlook, Mercury’s retrograde in Sagittarius is either the last siren song or the long overdue farewell to Saturn’s transit through Sagittarius, which has been sending down tests of faith since September 2015.
So, take heed – what arises in this Mercury retrograde is not a coincidence, nor is it merely inconvenience: it’s a direct call from old Kronos himself. Expect seriousness, boundaries, and limits to be solidified, codified, and concretized; what is laid to waste during this period will not easily be revived, though it will most likely be reviewed.
Otherwise, the month starts as it means to go on, with an opposition between Mars and Uranus on December 1st. As Mars sharpens his sword against Uranus’ whetstone, you can expect sparks to fly and emotions to erupt: choose your words and your arguments carefully. In normal conditions Mars in Libra would produce more passive material to contend with than aggressive, but since the folks with planets in late degrees of Aries (as well as Cancer, Capricorn, and Libra) have been getting a Uranian shock-inducing, all-things-must-change workout the past 6 months, it may be a case of something’s gotta give.
On the same day, Venus will enter the free-wheeling terra squirma of Sagittarius after a tenuous passage through Scorpio’s catacombs. While matters of love will certainly lighten up, they won’t necessarily become more serious. Sagittarius adores a long leash and open road, so keep your bags packed and your horizons wide until Venus enters Capricorn on Christmas Day.
Something otherworldly and inspired may come wafting in the door December 2nd when the first of three Jupiter-Neptune trines occurs across Scorpio & Pisces. Technically, this should be a winning combination: Jupiter creates increase, trines make for harmony, and Neptune yields a rosy-tinted view. As a result, we may be feeling ultra-generous and compassionate, or called deeper into healing, creative pursuits. On the other hand, it must also be said that Jupiter’s expansive ways and Neptune’s blurry vision have shadowy sides, too. The danger could be that our craziest ideas jump off the drawing board before we get a much-needed reality check. Ceres conjunct the North Node on this day emphasizes the concept of nurturing the vision – but don’t fall head over heels with it just yet. As this is the day before Mercury’s retrograde, a time where nothing is certain and everything is up in the air, whatever you do now is likely to undergo a significant re-work post-retrograde.
December 3rd is the day of Mercury’s station retrograde, as well as the Full Moon in Gemini. Mercury acts as maverick-cum-manager for this Full Moon on a night where he is sitting auspiciously still in our skies. The Full Moon in Gemini is a misty, nebulous business with both the Sun and Moon in harsh aspect to Neptune: whatever is said may come from a place of genuine intent, but my bet is that as this Full Moon unfolds (a process which could take several days, two weeks or 5-6 months), we’ll see which promises were made and which were made just to be broken. A Uranus-Juno square on the same day may manifest in an unexpected unraveling with a partner and with Mars opposite Pallas-Athena, sexual frustration may mount as a result. Whatever wheeling and dealing you’ve been doing in the realms of healing may start to come full circle when Chiron stations direct on December 5th. If you’ve been experiencing the other side of Chiron’s coin, wounding, you may be called once again to compassionately study your most compelling pains. The Juno-Pallas square on the same day may have you wondering what role your partner plays – or frankly doesn’t/can’t/won’t – in your healing process.
Mercury retrograde repeats a recent conjunction to Saturn in Sagittarius on December 6th. Accordingly, something serious may get closer to being set in stone. As Mercury is retrograde, however, we can’t assume that anything decided today will be final, even if it feels that way; other aspects between Mercury, Mars, and Saturn will provide the dialogue, drive, and discipline needed to keep muddling towards clarity.
I love December 8th for anything geared towards the greater good. With Vesta trine to Neptune, we can tap into a collective well of kindness and turn that into service for the folks that most need it. The Sun trine to Neptune provides the feel-goods in return for your good deeds.
On December 9th, Mars enters Scorpio after an uncomfortable passage through Libra, one of its signs of detriment. Some ancient Astrologers considered Mars strongest when in Scorpio: although Mars is potentially just as potent in trigger-happy Aries, in Scorpio, Mars combines his natural tendency towards ruthlessness with a winner-takes-all approach. You can count on the pace to cool to a slow burn and a silent but deadly strategy to unfold.
Today may also provide a momentary glimpse of brilliance, as asteroid Pallas-Athena reconnects with Mercury retrograde, reviving creative impulses which arose on November 27th. Your mind may be quick and able as it re-visits old queries and knocks them out, one by one.
December 9th also holds a trine between the Sun in Sagittarius and Ceres, the asteroid of mothering, nurturing, and self-worth. As your drive reaches a new intensity (Mars in Scorpio) and your mind clicks along (Mercury trine Pallas-Athena), you may feel rather pleased with yourself, indeed – which is not a bad way at all to start off the month.
