Astrology Transits for December 17th – December 23rd, 2017: Saturn in Capricorn
This is a week stuffed to the brim with action in Sagittarius: a New Moon in Sagittarius, Mercury’s direct station in Sagittarius, and the final days of Saturn in Sagittarius. Lumped together, this feels like a ‘check up from the neck up’ in the part of your chart ruled by Sagittarius before Saturn departs these shores for Capricorn.
This starts a new cycle of squeeze-induced learning that will last until 2020.
Up the summit we go, folks.
Without a doubt, the biggest moment of this week’s Astrology – if not the month and year, too – is Saturn’s move into Capricorn, the sign of the sea-goat, on December 19th.
Capricorn brings to mind country clubs and mahogany desks, the kinds of spaces where well-worn traditions, duty, and privilege go hand-in-hand. Perhaps I’m laying it on a bit thick with that kind of imagery, but there is something essentially conservative to Capricorn; inevitably, the part of our chart ruled by Capricorn tends to be an area of life where we feel much more comfortable following the rules and abiding by the norm. Whatever we’ve been settled down into considering as a norm, however, is about to get a serious work-around.
As Saturn transits Capricorn, he’ll squeeze and frustrate, fruitfully bringing you to the edge of your wits as he sees fits. Sometimes referred to as the ‘Lord of Karma,’ Saturn and his transits are somewhat notorious for their ability to deny us what we (think) we most want in a given area, but take heart, dear human: Saturn’s pressure is almost always useful.
Similar to a father-figure, if your father ruled by austere reign, Saturn prods us to recalibrate how much we give and receive in a certain area. His specialties are time, limits, discipline, loneliness, and his all-time favorite, fear. It’s true that even his upsides have downsides, but his wisdom is encapsulated in a thousand practical idioms we bandy about when times are tough: you reap what you sow; no pain, no gain; what you got you here what get you there.
No matter the area of your chart Saturn enters, his job will be the same: in Capricorn, Saturn will seek to structure and re-structure how you currently measure success and achievement in a particular area of life. Additionally, you may be forced to re-think how well a traditional framework supports your deepest, most authentic needs: could you do without some of the subconscious rules you’ve written about what this sphere of activity means? Is there a silent narrating voice from mom/dad/community/society that could use a good smacking?
Capricorn is one of Saturn’s home signs, so he’ll be frightfully enabled to bring about big lessons. I’ll write more about Saturn in Capricorn soon, and have plans to create a downloadable audio, time permitting, so watch this space.
Otherwise, this week starts with more change in asteroid land, following on from last week’s sign change for Juno and station retrograde for Ceres. Now its the turn of Pallas: having been retrograde since September 11th of this year, our kundalini queen is once again ready to hit the road (December 17th). Pallas is all things pattern-meets-productivity, so if you’ve been tackling how to infuse a bit of her intuitive know-how into a project, from today things will speed up significantly.
On the same day, December 17th, Vesta in Scorpio squares the Nodes. This has been a dynamic, challenging month for the Nodes. By the end of the month, no less than Ceres, the Sun, Venus, Mercury, Vesta, and Jupiter will have made contact with the nodal axis. What the Nodes represent, in a word or two, is the crossroads between where we need to let go (South Node) versus where we could use slightly more gusto (North Node). With Vesta squaring the Nodes, there could be a tipping point on how you feel that you could best be of service – is there a push-pull between what your heart wants to express (North Node in Leo) and your desire to innovate (South Node in Aquarius)? Are you trying to find the balance between for performing for a crowd vs. just doing you? All good things to mull over today, perhaps with a mulled wine in hand -’tis the season, after all.
The next day, December 18th, holds the New Moon in Sagittarius, the last lunar event of 2017. Sagittarius is a sign of big faith and optimism, which may have been dampened in years past by Saturn’s transit through the same sign. The first thought that came to me when looking at this New Moon was ‘say a little prayer’; not only does this connect to the inherently spiritual nature of Sagittarius, but it takes Saturn’s role into consideration. With Saturn near both Sun and Moon, the emphasis is on saying a little prayer, as well as showing up for practice. This is not the moment for big leaps, but for the kind of methodical, time-honored, tested baby steps forward that Saturn has been teaching you since September 2015 as he transited Sagittarius. With the chart ruler Jupiter next to Vesta and square the Nodes, the lesson could very well be that no matter what kind of baby steps you take, all roads lead to Rome (as long as you do more than just pray).
December 20th has me thinking of those times where you’ve got a break a bone in order to heal it. Today, Venus will square Chiron, hence the break, and trine Uranus, hence the breakthrough. I’m not saying that today couldn’t hold an ouchie or two, especially if you’ve got planets around 24 degrees of Pisces or Sagittarius, but try to keep in mind that what seems like the end may just be a much-needed reset. If there’s a way for you to flip the script in how you’re handling Venusian topics – most likely love, but including any luxurious feel-goods – do it, pronto. Change ain’t just the stuff you find between the sofa cushions, it’s our whole reason for living. This advice could be particularly meaningful for my folks with Cancer or Gemini rising, as Saturn’s moving into the parts of your chart dealing with romantic and/or committed partnerships.
The Sun, newly entered into Capricorn, will team up with Saturn on the same day as the Winter Solstice, December 21st. For many of our ancient brethren, the Winter Solstice was the birth of a new Sun – Sol Invictus – and signaled the triumphant start to the new solar year (need a visual? go here). The Winter Solstice was also known as Yule and handily happened at the same time of the year as Christmas, Saturnalia, and the mythical births of the ‘Sun’/‘Son’ kings Mithras, Helios, Dionysus, Horus, and of course, Jesus. In the relative darkness of the Winter Solstice, but with a view to an increasingly brighter future, I invite you to pause for just a moment today to reflect on the last year’s blessings and the next year’s intentions. Considering the other Astrology transits happening on the same day, your intention may be something around following your creative-artistic pursuits while still managing to find the time and energy required to nurture those closest to you. Scheduled periods of solitude could somehow be key. You may also be aiming to meld two disparate personas within you, one that feels warm and pillowy soft, and another that’s like carbon-fibred layered over steel. The truth is you can manage both; you are both.
Just in time for holiday travel, on December 22nd, Mercury stations direct: Hallelujah. He still needs a number of days to clear his ‘shadow’ period, so continue to count on delays and difficulties if you’re headed home for the holidays. The Pluto-Vesta sextile on the same day is there as your back-up. If needed, you can use their combined energies to shift any powerful vibes you pick up while in transit.
December 23rd is a quiet one, with no big Astrology before we head into the heart of the Christian holidays, but with the Moon’s move into kindly Pisces, there should be more than enough goodwill to spare the next few days.
