Astrology Transits for January 1st to January 6th: Uranus Direct

Welcome to 2018.

The new year opens with a Full Moon in Cancer, the home sign of the Moon, on January 1st. With an opposition between the Moon and Venus, the challenge may be deciding if what’s currently comfortable (Moon in Cancer) is what will continue to be attractive long-term (Venus in Capricorn). Full Moons are usually a moment of illumination, but with dizzying aspects to Neptune, we may get caught up in fantasies and daydreams. While this is not at all a bad thing in and of itself, it’s not the clearest Astro-weather for identifying what you want and taking decisive action.

Uranus stations direct on January 2nd. Generally speaking, outer planet retrogrades don’t make for front page Astro-news, but if you have planets or points at 24-29 degrees of Aries, Cancer, Capricorn, or Libra, you’ll want to take note (not that you’ll have been able to ignore Uranus’ firebrand thunderbolts). 2018 is Uranus’ last proper rendez-vous in the final degrees of Aries before it entertains a temporary dalliance with Taurus later in the year, so consider this your warning: whatever faulty structures you’ve been clinging to are at risk of being ripped from your hands.

Uranus can’t help it – his motto is ‘innovate or die’ – but he can help you if you let him. Shifts from Uranus can either show up as liberating changes or major disruptions; the difference between the two is often just a matter of awareness. As best you can, now is the time to proceed with eyes wide open about your relationship to change, freedom, and showing up as your authentic self.

On the same day, you may attempt to tend to your inner feels with outer feed-goods, thanks to the Jupiter-Ceres square. If you’re back at work for the first day, you may be tempted by the leftover holiday goodies in the breakroom or anxiously eyeing up the dessert menu at your local lunch joint. Others may feel an itchy need to compulsively click ‘submit’ on a basketful of discounted goods from their favorite online purveyor of retail therapy. As the old saying goes: ‘first, do no harm’; Ceres-Jupiter squares are maybe a wee bit indulgent, but usually the only victims are our waistlines and bank balances (and, considering the timing, perhaps our New Year resolutions).

Aspects between the Sun and Neptune on the same day may let us lean back into the illusory comfort these distractions provide for the time-being, and for some, the Mars square to the Nodes may be just the push needed to shift gears and forge ahead with a renewed sense of energy.

January 3rd will be handy for rekindling any romantic relations which were waylaid by your holiday schedule; hopefully, absence has made your hearts grow fonder. While a more powerful refresh will come next week when the Sun and Venus join up for their annual baptism-by-fire, you can now return to your pre-holiday levels of swiping hither thither. If you’re already in a committed twosome (or more), tonight holds the right date-night ingredients for gently reconnecting.

On January 4th we may be able to finally accept that we’re back to work and the holidays are over – and we may like that just fine. A lovely aspect between asteroid Vesta and Chiron suggests that healing could come from getting lost down a rabbit-hole of focus. Vesta has been in Scorpio since mid-November, so if you have important things happening in the part of your chart ruled by Scorpio, you may wish to buckle down like never before and reap the last embers of Vesta’s fiery determination before she departs for Sagittarius on January 14th.

Watch how you go on January 5th and 6th: Mars square Ceres and conjunct Jupiter is strong-willed, driven, and in Scorpio, perhaps ruthless. If you’ve been trying to get out from underneath the quagmire left over by Mercury’s recent retrograde in Sagittarius, you may feel like you’re finally cooking with gas again; on the other hand, there is a distinct possibility of overdoing it. With madman Mars next to Jupiter, the projection of irritation and anger could swell uncomfortably out of control.

Mercury will be playing a good cop/bad cop routine on January 6th when he trines Uranus and squares Chiron on the same day. The Mercury-Uranus trine feels a bit like a ‘get out of jail free’ card; this is an aspect that occurred on November 25th and December 10th, 2017, so the mental breakthroughs which present today may have been in development since then. The Mercury-Chiron square, however, is about hitting the wall: thou shalt not pass go. Keep your eyes peeled for hard-to-accept but oh-so-true messages to arrive in your inbox.
