Full Moon in Cancer, January 2018 // Crab Comforts
When I close my eyes and think of this Full Moon, I see her floating above the precipice of a grand doorway atop a bank of clouds, like an exit sign separating 2017 and 2018.
Right this way, please, she beckons.
Yes, tonight lady Luna lights the way forward, as she always has. She has shared her luminous beams with us for thousands of years, like a beacon in the sky, a clock, a calendar, a God and a mother.
It is in her nature to give us that light when it is most needed – when our path is the least clear.
When what lies ahead looms fuzzily out of sight’s reach.
When our footing is unsure.
The comfort of her light is most important when the darkness seems the most insurmountable.
Returning to the light ablates all memory of what came before: when we find ourselves sitting underneath the silvery shards of a Full Moon, we easily forget just what it was like in the darkness, how it felt to fumble and how often we cursed the night.
The Full Moon in Cancer is about cutting a path between dark and light, the safe and the sensual.
In many of us, there is a jagged split in the psyche between comfort and excitement.
We need comfort: too little, and anxiety grabs the wheel, too much, and we stagnate.
We yearn for excitement: too little, and our joie de vivre disappears, too much, and we feel out of control.
Cancer is a creature – a crab – of comfort: safety, security, and the feeling of being held are amongst its most deeply embedded psychic impulses.
It is not, by its nature, a sign that takes risks. Eat your heart out (and also, RIP), Azzedine: Cancer is the real king of cling.
And cling on, it will – well past the point of sensibility. As the home sign of the Moon, Cancer’s memories run long and deep; these natives never forget the darkness that was and will be once again.
So, at this Full Moon, take a moment and ask yourself: what’s keeping you here?
Affection? Fear? Some delirious combination of the two?
As you step over 2018’s threshold, only you can say, and decide, what will be your answer.
