Astrology Transits for January 7th to January 13th: Venus Conjunct Pluto

This week should be interesting – potentially, positively and powerfully – for my friends with planets around 15-23° of Scorpio and Capricorn (if you’ve got planets around the same degrees in Aries, Libra, and Cancer, it may be more touch-and-go).

On January 7th there are no major aspects, which takes us directly to January 8th, a lovely day. Both Venus and the Sun sextile Jupiter in Scorpio, generating fun, friendliness, and generosity, which is further aided by the Moon’s presence in socially slick Libra. Jupiter in Scorpio may bolster social connections by deepening them; now is a good time to connect through sharing a few choice secrets.

There is a lot of Astrology happening on January 9th, so you may wish to make a cup of tea and settle in before reading further.

The day starts off with a trine, or harmonious connection, between Mercury and Pallas-Athena. In a sense, these two have a natural simpatico as they’re both related to brilliance, although their modes of achieving it differ significantly. Mercury’s route starts in the cold confines of the linear brain, and Pallas-Athena’s creative waves arrive via rising kundalini; when they work in sync with one another, the result feels like a powerful internal meeting between your left and right brains. Sketch, brainstorm, plan your attack – use this day to your advantage. As this is the third of three such aspects to occur in the last two months, it may also be useful to consider how or if particular themes have repeated between November 27th and December 9th, 2017.

And now, the déluge: the rest of the Astrology on January 9th is a deep entanglement between the Sun, Venus, and Pluto in Capricorn; all three points are in sextile to Mars in Scorpio.

So – where to begin? In the most important place: Venus’ superior conjunction with the Sun.

As I’ve written elsewhere:

The astronomical significance of Venus was nearly equal to the Sun and the Moon; Mesopotamian tablets from 1650 B.C.E. etched with omina (omens) described the way she entered and exited periods of visibility in the sky. The journey of planet Venus, into the burning rays of the Sun and back out again, set into motion the creation of incredible myths based on an evolving female archetype who was both sexual and powerful – a woman unafraid to descend into the depths of the Underworld.

Perhaps the best known of these was Inanna, the almighty powerful Goddess from ancient Sumeria who held the ‘Tablets of Destiny’ and controlled the Universe. The story of her descent into the Underworld correlated to the path of Venus as it moved behind the Sun; in this myth, Inanna/Ishtar is stripped bare, forced to face her deepest fears and vulnerabilities, dies and is reborn as the ‘Queen of Heaven.’

In theory, this is also a ‘Full Moon’ moment for Venus, but it is an odd one indeed: without her scintillating presence in the sky, this is a moment of illumination that occurs in darkness. Thus, your revelations are likely to be strongest with your eyes closed and your mind and heart open.

This cycle has been building since March 25th, 2017, when Venus was retrograde in Aries. I wrote in my 2017 Venus Retrograde piece that this was no simple Venus retrograde, as it contained two Venus-Saturn squares – notorious for romantic difficulties – and ended on a conjunction to Chiron, the comet of wounding and healing. Equally, this ‘Full Moon’ moment for Venus is no less complicated: traversing the Underworld is challenging enough, but now Venus finds herself with the burning rays of the Sun to her left and Pluto’s powerful undertow to the right.

Most certainly, this is not mundane boy-meets-girl material. Attraction and magnetism abound, sexuality simmers, and one can just make out the siren songs of powerfully seductive, and possibly toxic, paramours. More negatively, this could manifest as gaslighting and power trips.

Venus in Capricorn is formidable (in this sign I see her as a stony, well-appointed madame unwilling to put up with any lip), but hardly anyone can match wits with Pluto.  Pluto’s usually operates just below waking consciousness, but the Sun’s bright rays may inadvertently shed light on some of his hidden maneuverings.

This scene is further complicated by all three points, Sun, Venus, and Pluto, connecting with Mars in Scorpio on the same day.

Mars in Scorpio holds no prisoners, but he does hold his cards quite close to this chest. His powers are psychic and precise, and not to be underestimated. Potentially, Mars can add a dynamic appeal – does he work as a deus ex machina for Venus? Will Mars’ helpful rays remind us to stand up for ourselves amidst the murky whirlpool of feels?

The best attitude could be to simply watch what is and take note of how you feel. This healing process will continue to unfold, layer by layer, until the next Venus-Sun conjunction on October 26th, 2018 during the heart of the Venus in Scorpio retrograde. Before then, Venus will re-appear in the sky as the evening star, Venus Hesperus,  so you can also look for further clarity around that time.

On January 11th, Mercury finally lands in Capricorn after an extended sojourn in the wilds of Sagittarius. Mercury becomes untethered and scattered in Sagittarius: he makes fantastical grand plans that have no clear path towards execution and often finds himself in the rather unenviable position of sticking his foot where his toothbrush should go.

In Capricorn, however, Mercury is thoroughly grounded and not at all interested in whims and fancies. During Mercury’s transit in this sign, word quickly becomes bond.

And bond these words will when Mercury meets up with Saturn on January 13th. Today is excellent for concretizing your plans. If you were one of the lucky birds that got engaged over the holidays, you might choose this day for applying for the legal formalization of your commitment. Otherwise, this is a day for sober meditation or the signing of long-term agreements.

The last day of the week also holds another touchy moment for Venus when she squares Uranus on January 13th (as if she didn’t already have enough on her girdle). Romance may temporarily hit the skids, or you may find yourself dealing with a jarring moment with femme friends or finances. Healing may come later in the night when Venus will link up with Chiron. Known as the gentle-natured centaur healer, Chiron has a cupboard full of salves to tend to your latest scratches.
